Hwy 53 project in Braselton is "pretty much complete"

BRASELTON—A road improvement project on Highway 53 in Braselton is "pretty much complete" according to Jackson County Manager Kevin Poe.

"The section they're improving is basically a section from I-85 up to Johnson Road," said Poe, noting that the town of Braselton is the lead agency of the joint project, which is also being done in conjuction with the DOT.

Braselton Town Manager Jennifer Dees said the total project cost $1,275,222.

The only remaining work is at Chardonnay Trace, where crews have installed a traffic light to control it trucks going in and out of the Pilot truck stop facility.

"(Pilot) doesn't want to make any changes to that section of roadway there, but a lot of the problems we've seen at that section of road has been from trucks exiting out of that traffic," said Poe.

Another signal was added at Braselton Industrial Parkway, which has been functioning over the last two months or so.

"We were hoping the project would be done several months ago, but because of the issues Braselton ran into with the corporate offices at Pilot, they've had to go through some legal maneuvering to push the issues," said Poe.

To Poe's understanding, those issues have been resolved.

"There's very little left to be done before that Chardonnay Trace signal can be activated," said Poe.

Dees said she expects the brunt of the work to be done by August 28, with only "punch list" items remaining.
