Gainesville teenager dies in single-car crash

GAINESVILLE—A teenager is dead and charges are pending against another after a single-car crash on Highway 13 in Gainesville Thursday night.

Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Auston Allen said Alfredo Juarez, 16 of Gainesville, died after Marco Cruz, 19 of Gainesville, lost control of his Honda Civic, overcorrected and hit a tree on the passenger side.

"(Cruz) suffered minor injuries," said Allen, adding that the accident happened at 4:53 p.m.

"There's a slight curve to road there on Highway 13, as he entered that curve he veered to the right and struck a plastic construction barrel...I would say it's overcorrection because there's no damage from the barrel (on the car)."

The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is working the accident scene to try to determine how fast Cruz was driving to see what charges might be handed down.

Both people were wearing their seatbelts, and Allen said they doesn't suspect drugs or alcohol to be a factor, either.
