LISTEN: Library Board names MacKinney as new director

GAINESVILLE - The Hall County Library Board has selected the interim Director of Library Services to fill the position permanently.

Lisa MacKinney was unanimously selected by the board at their meeting Tuesday afternoon.

"In a unanimous, Lisa MacKinney was selected as the new director," chairman Andy Henderson announced. The room burst with applause.

MacKinney began filling in when Adrian Mixon retired late in the spring. "I'm thrilled. I've had a lot of time to think about what I would like to do [as director], things I want to accomplish. I've already got some goals set and the search committee made I really clear what their goals are and happily, they really mesh," MacKinney said.

Following the vote, the board adopted a budget, which included no furlough days. That announcement came with more cheers from the board, and was unanimously approved. The materials budget, which helped bump out those furlough days, meant the board could focus on getting more new materials in the branches.

"Best day ever!" MacKinney said. "We appreciate everyone who worked so hard to make that happen."

The board also voted to increase hours at the Gainesville and Spout Springs location, and made hours uniform each day at the branches, excluding Saturdays.  Spout Springs and Gainesville will both be open each Saturday. MacKinney said the book drops will also be open beginning August 1.  And, MacKinney was given approval by the board to begin research into a passport program that would allow some library branches to issue and renew passports.

MacKinney was one of a dozen applicants to vie for the position.

"I'm very excited for the opportunity and I can't wait to get my feet wet!"
