Hall Co. Commission delays agreement with F. Branch for road improvements

GAINESVILLE—An intergovernmental agreement that has been in consideration for four years that would bring turn lanes and new pavement to the intersection of McEver Road and Gainesville Street is going to wait, at least for now.

Hall County Commissioners unanimously voted to table an intergovernmental agreement that would allow for the restructuring of the intersection in Flowery Branch at their meeting Thursday night.

Flowery Branch has already given their approval to go ahead with their part of the plan; the total project budget is $1.1 million according to Ken Rearden, Hall County Public Works Director.

The city would provide $40,000 for traffic light structures, while the county would pickup the tab for the paving.

"We would be putting in left-turn and right-turn lanes on all four streets to help the queuing of turning vehicles, and increasing the traffic signal that's there to turn lights as well," said Rearden.

Commissioner Billy Powell made the motion to table the plan.

"We changed what our commitment capability was at the commission level, which affects the amount of contribution from their side. And rather than...not have an agreement and vote on it, they (Flowery Branch) want to see if they can juggle around some numbers and see if they can come up with the balance," said Powell.

He said this will give Flowery Branch time to potentially "re-prioritize" some of their capital projects and try to allocate the funds.

Flowery Branch gave their approval on May 7, and said they've had the money in their budget since the original plan surfaced in 2011.

An email and phone call to Flowery Branch Mayor Mike Miller seeking comment were not immediately returned.
