Storms spark house fires in north Gwinnett area

UNDATED — Heavy storms wrapped up the Memorial Day holiday in parts of north Georgia, and a line of stormy weather sparked a couple of house fires on the north end of Gwinnett County Monday night.

The Gwinnett County Fire Department responded first to a house fire in the 2200 block of Duck Hollow Trace, NW in Lawrenceville. A neighbor called authorities at 9:18 p.m. and said lightning had hit the house and the occupants were in the process of evacuating. The fire was extinguished quickly, but the family of four was displaced as a result.

In addition, firefighters said lightning hit a house in the 209 block of Vinca Circle, NE in Buford.  Crews found a small smoldering fire in the attic when they arrived. They extinguished the fire quickly. the occupants of the house said they heard the lightning strike and called authorities. They were able to stay in the house. Crews wrapped up their work at the Buford home around 9:45 p.m.

The storms also brought down some trees in a Lawrenceville neighborhood during the height of the storm, which in turn pulled down some electrical wires. Firefighters responded at 9:55 p.m. to the report from a passerby of wires down on Ridge Road, NE in Lawrenceville.  Crews found live wires down arcing and requested Jackson EMC to respond.  There were no injuries and no damage reported.
