VIDEO: Canadian consul general visits Lanier Olympic venue

By Jerry Gunn

GAINESVILLE - Canadian Consul Peter Taylor came to Gainesville's Olympic Venue Friday for a first time visit to observe athletes practice for Saturday''s Canadian National Team Trials.

Taylor said it was obvious why the kayakers from up north liked the Lake Lanier venue so much.

"Our athletes are great ambassadors for our country," Taylor said. "We have a tradition of some very fine performers in canoe and kayak and you have a world class facility."

Taylor said Canada and Georgia are solid trading partners, with $10-point-4-million in annual bilateral trade.

He added that Georgia's trade and investment generates 330 thousand 600 jobs in the state.

Venue manager Morgan House watched an estimated 100 Canadian Kayak athletes warm up for a big event Saturday.

"They're going to be qualifying for the world championship team," House said. "They're going to Europe this summer to compete in the world championships which is an Olympic qualifying event."

House said the Saturday event in Gainesville actually begins the Olympic qualifying process for the Canadians.
He added that the Gainesville Olympic venue is the only one that is being used for its intended purpose.

Gainesville hosted the Olympic canoe and kayak competition in the '96 games.
