Suspicious fire under investigation in Clarkesville

CLARKESVILLE - State and local authorities are investigating a suspicious fire at a home in Clarkesville from overnight.

Clarkesville Fire Chief Jerry Palmer said Clarkesville Fire responded to a 1,200-square-foot home at 1885 Robertson Loop Road at 1:32 a.m. Thursday.

When crews arrived they found the home about 20 percent involved with smoke and fire. With assistance from Demorest and Habersham County fire departments, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly.

Clarkesville Police Department and Habersham Emergency Medical Services also responded.

Four adults who were home at the time of the fire escaped safely. The American Red Cross provided shelter for the displaced residents.

"The home suffered fire and smoke damage to two adjoining rooms," Palmer said. "The fire was determined to be suspicious in nature and investigators from both Clarkesville P.D. and the Georgia State Fire Marshal's Office were called in and are currently handling the case."
