FAA Inspector arraigned for bypassing airport security with firearm

ATLANTA - A Sugar Hill man has been arraigned on a federal misdemeanor charge of unlawfully entering an airport and airplane without submitting to security requirements.

According to Acting U.S. Attorney John Horn, Ernest E. Abbott, a 69-year-old Federal Aviation Administration Inspector, flew from Atlanta to New York on January 12, 2015. Prior to boarding , he used his Hartsfield Jackson International Airport employee card to bypass Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screening. On the way back, however, TSA agents located a firearm in Abbott's carry-on luggage.

Abbott was charged in New York with unlawfully possessing a firearm.

“The security of all airline passengers is of paramount concern,” said Horn. “Neither FAA employees who travel for work nor any other passenger is exempt from the consequences when they fail to submit to the airport security screening process.”

Abbott was arraigned on April 15, 2015.
