Track and Field: Buford storms to boys title on final day at 8-AAAA meet

MONROE -- Buford track and field stormed to a stellar final day at the Region 8-AAAA track and field championships, allowing the Wolves to finish first overall, while the Lady Wolves took second place.

The Wolves garnered gold medals in nine different events across the final day of boys and girls competition at Monroe Area High.

Justin McCray claimed two events for the Buford boys -- who edged out North Oconee by 2.5 points for the 8-AAAA crown -- winning 110 hurdles (15.17) and 300 hurdles (40.13). Meanwhile Xavier Gantt claimed the 100 (11.12) and Khalil Anderson won the 200 (22.40). Buford’s 4x400 (3:27) and 4x100 (42.90) teams also struck gold.

On the girls side Erin Marsh notched two victories by claiming the 400 (58.70) and 300 hurdles (22.40), and the Girls 4x400 team also won (4:12), as the Lady Wolves finished 20 points back of region champion North Oconee.

White County also took third in both boys and girls portions of the meet, led by Jenna Gearing, who swept the distance races by claiming the 3,200 on Thursday (11:21). She won the 1,600 on Tuesday.

The top four finishers in each event qualified for the state sectionals, which will be held at various sites next Saturday. Region 8-AAAA qualifiers will compete at Eagles Landing for a spot at the state finals.
