Gainesville man arrested after Habersham chase

CLARKESVILLE - A Gainesville man was arrested after leading a Habersham County traffic enforcement unit on a chase Saturday night.

According to Deputy Sheriff Benny Loudermilk of the Habersham County Sheriff's Office HEAT unit, the chase happened at 7:32 p.m. when he attempted to stop a 1986 Ford Bronco that was northbound on Georgia 365 just north of Demorest-Mt. Airy Highway.

Loudermilk said he registered the vehicle doing 93 mph in a 65-mph zone.

"I turned around on him and he failed to yield," Loudermilk said. "I called chase and we continued about 80 mph."

Lt. Sam Jones joined the pursuit and the officers attempted a rolling roadblock on Georgia 15 (U.S. 441) around Hollywood Hills Road.

"He tried to avoid the rolling roadblock," Loudermilk said.

The driver surrendered and was arrested without incident just south of Talmadge Drive in Hollywood.

Loudermilk identified the driver as Toby Alan Parker, 37, of Gainesville.

Parker is charged with driving under the influence, speeding, driving on a suspended license, fleeing and attempting to elude, reckless driving, and operation of an unregistered vehicle, Loudermilk said.

Loudermilk said no vehicles were damaged, either the county's or the suspect's.

Two Habersham County units were involved in the pursuit and Georgia State Patrol had units en route to assist at the time the driver surrendered, Loudermilk said.
