Child's death in Lumpkin County ruled accidental drowning

DAHLONEGA - State authorities said the cause of death of a three-year-old boy in Lumpkin County Wednesday morning was an accidental drowning.

Sherry Lang, a spokeswoman for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, confirmed the cause of death Thursday night.

Earlier this week, Lumpkin County Sheriff's Lt. Wesley Burnett said Charles J. Lewis' mother reported him missing around 9:00 a.m.  The boy had left the house without his mother's knowledge.

"She had not located (him) as of the time of the call, and (he) had been missing for just a short while before she called," Burnett said.

Authorities found the boy's body in a pond near his Hemlock Trail/Frank Christian Road home around 1:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Emergency officials from several agencies, including Lumpkin, Dawson, Hall, White and Forsyth counties, the Georgia State Patrol and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources were involved in the search.
