Gwinnett Co. deputy arrested, fired for sexual assault

LAWRENCEVILLE - A Gwinnett County Sheriff's Deputy was fired Monday after an internal investigation indicated he had sexually assaulted three inmates.

According Gwinnett County Sheriff's Deputy Shannon Volkadov, Dennis Day was arrested Monday and had a hearing Tuesday afternoon.

Volkadov said the investigation began on April 5. "An inmate housed at the Gwinnett County Jail utilized the investigative services tip line to report alleged misconduct - sexual misconduct - by one of our deputies," said Volkadov. 

The alleged incidents are believed to have occurred three separate times between July 8, 2014 and April 4, 2015. Volkadov said their investigation indicated probably cause that the incidents did happen.

Day is charged with three counts of violation of oath of office and three counts of sexual assault against a person in custody.

Day was a probationary employee and had been with the agency for less than a year, according to a press release issued earlier.

Day is being held in the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.
