Gwinnett Co. shelter dogs responding to treatment

LAWRENCEVILLE - Four more dogs are exhibiting symptoms after the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter facility was closed due to an illness.

According to a release from Gwinnett County Police, a total of 23 animals have had mild symptoms and all animals are responding well to treatment.

The shelter has received partial results from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine on one of the dogs that was tested. The results indicate signs of pneumonia, however the shelter is awaiting lab cultures to confirm what the initial sickness was that caused the pneumonia.

A long-term secondary shelter has been secured and will be open to the public soon and operations will be transferred there; that address will be announced when the facility is open. The main shelter will remain closed, as animals are still being treated inside.

Last week, the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter had to be closed following an illness outbreak among several dogs, including one that passed away from the illness.
