Former Hall Co. Solicitor Smith dies at 78

GAINESVILLE - Douglas E. Smith, a former Hall County Court Solicitor who practiced law for more than 35 years in Gainesville, has died.

Smith, a graduate of Gainesville High School and the University of Georgia, began practicing law in Gainesville in 1960 with C. Ernest Smith, Jr. and they later formed a law partnership, Smith and Smith.

He also was an officer in the Georgia National Guard and was called to amass with other National Guard troops in Miami, FL, in 1962, in preparation for a possible invasion of Cuba.

Smith was elected to two consecutive terms as Solicitor of Hall County. He also served as President of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association in 1986.

Funeral services for Smith, who was 78, will be held Monday at Grace Episcopal Church in Gainesville. Full details on services are available on AccessNorthGA.com's obituary page.
