Peachtree City Police Chief resigns

By The Associated Press
PEACHTREE CITY - The Police Chief of Peachtree City has tendered his resignation.

According to the city's website Chief William McCollom presented his resignation Tuesday to City Manager James Pennington.

Pennington accepted the resignation and said, "The members of the department have continued to do an amazing job amid the national publicity, speculation, and negativity toward law enforcement that this tragic accident has generated over the past two months."

McCollom's name entered the national spotlight as a result of a New Year's Day shooting at his residence roughly ten weeks ago.

Early in the morning on January 1st McCollom called 911 to report that he had accidentally shot his wife as they were lying in bed.

McCollom told investigators that his service revolver discharged as he was moving it from the bed to a nearby nightstand.

58-year-old Margaret McCollom continues to recover and, according to the city's website, focusing on her return to health is the primary reason cited by Chief McCollom for his resignation.

She remains at Shepherd Spinal Center in Atlanta where she is being treated for paralysis below her waist.

The website said the city will immediately begin a search for a new Chief of Police, but that Captain Stan Pye, who has been serving as Acting Chief since the January 1 incident, will remain in that position.
