North Georgia school districts honored by Department of Education

The Georgia Department of Education (DOE) released the annual list of Highest Performing, Highest Progress schools and Reward District Schools, and some North Georgia districts are included.

"We certainly saw a good representation from that part of the state," said Matt Cardoza, spokesman for the DOE. "Districts in [North Georgia] always perform well."

Cardoza said Forsyth County and Jefferson City Schools were named as reward districts for the 2015-2016 school year. Reward Districts are awarded to school systems with the highest absolute performance over three years for the “all students” group on the statewide assessments, among districts of their size.

And, Cardoza said several districts, including in Barrow, Habersham, Hall, Lumpkin, Jackson and White counties, along with Buford and Jefferson City made the Highest Performing and Highest Progress lists.

"Highest-Performing is essentially saying they're in the top five percent of the states Title 1 schools, when it comes to the performance over our three year average. The highest progress schools are among the top ten percent among those that are making progress," said Cardoza.

"So it's really a great honor for schools, showing that they're doing really well both in their ultimate achievement and if they're high progress schools they're doing really well and they're moving the needle for students."
