White Co., Cleveland & Helen awarded federal grant for emergency generators

CLEVELAND—White County, Cleveland and Helen will get new fixed generators for their public service departments thanks to federal grants from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) and the Department of Homeland Security.

White County received a $67,080 grant for a generator that will serve six fire stations and traffic operations. The funding is broken down into $50,310 in federal money, $6,708 from the state and $10,062 in local shares.

Cleveland and Helen both received identical $25,257 grants for a generator for its police department, broken down into $18,942 in federal dollars, $2,526 in state and $3,789 in local.

Helen was awarded a $27,078 grant for a generator, which, like Helen, will go towards its police departmen. That money is broken down into $20,309 in federal money, $2,708 in state and $4,061 in local.

“Preparing in advance for potential disasters makes the whole community safer. The generator will allow these critical facilities to continue serving the public if power fails during severe weather events or other emergencies,” said GEMA/HS Director Jim Butterworth in a news release.

The funding comes from GEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, "which provides funds to state agencies and local governments for projects that reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and property from the effects of natural hazards by breaking the repetitive cycle of destruction and reconstruction," according to the release.
