Piedmont's Feldman announces retirement after 40-plus years on sidelines

DEMOREST — After more than 40 years of coaching at several different levels, Piedmont volleyball coach Sid Feldman is calling it a career announcing his retirement earlier this week. Feldman spent the last seven seasons at the helm of the Lady Lion volleyball program, helping Piedmont to a Great South Athletic Conference championship in 2010 and 20-win seasons in six of his seven years.

Feldman's announcement comes after the 2015 season where he led his team to a fourth straight USA South postseason appearance taking the third spot in the South Division standings of the league. A national search for the new Head Coach of volleyball at Piedmont will be opened within the next few days to find just the third coach in the last 15 years of the program's history.

"Sid Feldman is a legend in college athletics," said Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Jim Peeples. "It has been an honor to work with him, learn from him and call him a friend. For the last seven years, he has done a tremendous job leading our volleyball program. His shoes will be difficult to fill, but he has set the program up for long-term success."

"It's been a joyous seven years here at Piedmont," said Feldman of his time at PC. "The height of my coaching career happened at Piedmont when we had three players receive Academic All-District from CoSIDA with one of those going on be named a two-time Academic All-American. I think that's what athletics at the collegiate level is supposed to be about."

Feldman went on to talk about his team's high points on the court as well, saying "We've been successful on the court as well, and I've been very proud of that. It's just been fun and rewarding and Piedmont is without a doubt one of the best places to work."

During his Piedmont career, Feldman posted a 153-86 overall record including a program-best 28 wins in 2013 and a GSAC title in 2010. His 153 wins is the second most in the last 19 seasons of the program's history behind only Katie O'Brien's 178 over eight seasons from 2000 to 2007.

The departure of the volleyball coaching legend is just two seasons after Feldman entered the NCAA records as one of the winningest coaches in the nation. Feldman debuted in the top 50 national listing at #32 in number of wins (453) after the 2013 season which was his fifth in Division III, the required minimum number of years to be counted in the Division III coaching records.

With Feldman's departure, a national search for the new head coach of volleyball at Piedmont will be opened within the next few days.
