Funeral set for former Cornelia city commissioner

CORNELIA - Funeral services for longtime Cornelia Ward 2 Commissioner George McEntire will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Cornelia.

McEntire died Monday at his home following an extended illness.

Those who worked with or observed McEntire during his tenure of nearly 12 years on the city commission recall that he felt strongly that city leaders should work as a team for the betterment of the city. They also note that he was not afraid to disagree with or speak up against other officials when he believed it was in the best interest of the city's residents.

McEntire, in conjunction with Ward 1 Commissioner Bill "Doc" Cuthbertson, worked tirelessly to help secure equipment for the Cornelia Volunteer Force, ensuring the 18-member unit had vehicles, uniforms, funding and equipment to assist the city and surrounding jurisdictions with special events.

A U.S. Navy veteran who later served in the U.S. Army Reserve, McEntire also was a longtime employee of Lee Arrendale State Prison.

He also had served as post commander for Grant Reeves VFW Post 7720 for two years, was a life member of Military Order of the Cooties, American Legion Post 84, and Cornelia Lodge No. 92 Free and Accepted Masons.
