Derek Hagar charges to USCS Sprint Car win at Talladega

By Series PR

EASTABOGA, Ala. - Derek Hagar from Marion, Ark. raced past Morgan Turpen to take the lead on lap 23 of Saturday night’s USCS Sprint Car Series feature, and drove to his seventh series win of the season at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Ala.

The win marked Hagar’s 36th career series victory.

The win was especially sweet since the United Sprint Car Series had not visited the famed 1/3 mile red clay oval at Talladega Short Track in over a decade. The USCS held its first ever sanctioned event at the track on April 25, 1997.

“Man she (Turpen) drove me real clean, but, she drove real hard,” Hagar said. “I was fortunate to get by her. It looked like she just got loose toward the end and got a little wide exiting turn four. That gave me the opportunity for the pass to win it.”

Anthony Nicholson battled most of the race for the third position with Turpen’s team-mate, Terry Gray, before slipping past Turpen’s fading mount on the final lap to take second. Turpen held on to finish in third place. Gray finished fourth, with Howard Moore in fifth.

Eric Riggins, Jr., Jeff Willingham, Marshall Skinner, Michael Miller and Curt Terrell rounded out the top ten.

Riggins kicked off the evening’s racing action by winning the Hoosier Tire Speed Dash. Gray scored the win in the first heat, Turpen won the second heat and Hagar took the victory in the third heat.

Turpen was the provisional pole-starter after she scored the most passing points in heat race action. After a zero was rolled on the inversion, she also received the K&N Filters Pole Award.

The USCS Sprint Car Series continues their 2015 schedule on October 16 and 17 with the USCS Florida State Championship races at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Florida.
