Softball: Buford takes out North Oconee to move into 8-AAAA title bout

BUFORD — The Buford softball team will play for its fourth straight Region 8-AAAA title on Saturday after pushing past North Oconee in two games in the region tournament semifinals in Buford.

The Lady Wolves (21-2) doubled up North Oconee 6-3 in Game 1 and then edged out the Lady Titans 5-4 in Game 2 to set up a showdown with North Hall in the championship battle at 1 p.m. Saturday in Buford.

Buford scored three unanswered runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break up a 3-3 tie, and take Game 1. Peyton Wolfe earned the win in relief of starter Logan Caymol, pitching 1 2/3 innings without giving up any runs. 

Baylee Sexton helped lead the offense, going 3 for 4, with an RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases, while senior Lea Edwards finished 2 for 3, with 2 RBI. Gabby Benson also had a hit and a run scored.

Buford came from behind in Game 2, scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning to complete the sweep. Sexton capped the surge with a three-run, inside-the-park home run to give the Lady Wolves the lead.  Wolfe earned her second win of the night in relief, pitching 1 1/3 innings without allowing a hit or run.

Drew Puckett also finished with a double, RBI and a run scored, while Benson had a hit and a run scored. Breanna Gutierrez also doubled and scored a run.
