Frigid weather causes pipe to burst at G'ville assisted living home, residents evacuated

GAINESVILLE - Assisted living facility Summer's Landing at Limestone was forced to evacuate for about an hour Thursday afternoon when a pipe burst at the building.

Executive Directer Rosalyn Jones said that staff members noticed water coming through the laundry room ceiling around 1:45 p.m.

"Our maintenance guy cut off all the water and we proceeded to evacuate all of our residents also at that time, said Jones. "We did have to come out in the cold, but as we were evacuating we were grabbing blankets."

She also said wheelchairs and chairs were brought outside for the elderly residents.

Jones said the center has 26 residents, with needs ranging from personal care to memory care.

Jones said family members were notified and some residents were able to go with family.

"If they had the space, we recommended they stay overnight with family. But for those that do not have the space at their homes, we are working on getting placement for them."

"Once we figure out what our damage is, what our situation is, whether or not we're going to have electricity, whether or not we can sleep in our building... once that is assessed, then we'll be able to determine what our next step is. So it's either going to be us back in our building tonight, or we're going to call our emergency contacts for placement."

The broken pipe was blamed on sub-freezing temperatures.
