GAINESVILLE - Gainesville fire crews battled a fire at the old Fieldale plant at Dorsey and Davis streets this afternoon. <br />
Fire Division Chief Keith Smith said in an email that the fire was quickly knocked down and crews stayed to ensure all hot spots were extinguished. The plant was undergoing renovation at the time of the fire.<br />
Smith said in an earlier email that the fire had penetrated the roof. Upon arrival of fire crews, smoke and flames were showing from the building.<br />
The fire appears to have been caused by some welding work that was done this morning on some old pipes and machinery. Smith said the Fire Marshal estimates about $10,000 worth of damage was done.<br />
Smith said units left the scene at about 3:30 p.m. and that Dorsey Street is now re-opened.
U.S. stocks are closing sharply higher after China's main stock index logged its biggest gain in eight weeks. A report also showed that the U.S. economy expanded at a much faster pace than previously estimated.
Public health officials reported nearly 200 patients have now qualified for Georgia's new medical marijuana registry, with an uptick in the number of doctors now approved to recommend cannabis oil as a treatment.
