ATLANTA (AP) - A man has been shot by a police officer near a downtown Atlanta park after he stabbed a Georgia State University Police officer, authorities say.
The incident occurred just after 4 p.m. Wednesday. Atlanta Police Capt. Paul Guerrucci tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the suspect was shot in the lower torso and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for surgery.
Atlanta Police spokesman Officer John Chafee says the man appeared to be drinking alcohol when an Atlanta Police officer approached him. The man walked away and encountered the university police officer, who was wearing plain clothes, then took out a large knife and cut the officer.
Chafee says the Atlanta officer then fired.
The suspect and the injured officer were both in stable condition at the hospital.
