JEFFERSON - A Jackson County woman is in critical condition after she was shot in the head over the weekend.

Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum says deputies responded to a call around 9 p.m. Friday from a woman who was requesting help.

"At that time, we weren't sure what we had," Mangum said

Upon arrival at a home on Albert Lane, they found the female caller and a man deceased from apparent self-inflicted gun shot wounds, according to Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge Mike Ayers.

"A white male, identified as Brendon Kemp was found deceased at the scene," said Ayers. "It does appear at this time that Brendon died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head."

Ayers said his body was sent to the GBI crime lab Decatur for autopsy.

Mangum said Kemp was the son of the female victim. "The female subject was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center where she remains in critical condition from a gunshot wound to the head," she said.

The GBI is working the investigation jointly with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.
