TALLULAH FALLS - It took more than four hours, but a hiker was rescued from the bottom of Tallulah Gorge Wednesday.

Tallulah Falls Fire Department personnel said the unidentified 57-year-old female victim suffered a possible tibia/fibula (shinbone/calf) fracture while navigating the area of the gorge floor.

The 9-1-1 call of the injury was received at 11:43 a.m., and rescuers reached the top of the gorge stairs with her at 3:49 p.m., Tallulah Falls Fire Chief Matthew Smith said.

Carrying an injured victim out of the gorge is a labor-intensive process that takes time.

In addition to Tallulah Falls Fire/Rescue, personnel from Rabun County Rescue Squad/Emergency Management Agency, Rabun County Fire Department Station Four, Habersham Technical Rescue Team, Habersham Emergency Medical Services, Habersham County Fire Department, Lee Arrendale State Prison Fire Department, and Assistant Tallulah Gorge State Park Manager Jessica James assisted in the rescue.

"It happened in the middle of the day, which is when just about everybody is at work," Smith said. "That's where the mutual aid came into play."
