Demorest woman arrested after leaving four children in hot car

BALDWIN - Baldwin Police Chief Chad Nichols today released details about the woman arrested for leaving four children in a hot car Monday afternoon.

Nichols said that around 4 p.m. Monday his officers were called to the parking lot of Heritage Gardens Apartments off Willingham Avenue regarding the children, ages 4 months to 6 years, inside a parked vehicle.

Officers arrived and found the children in the vehicle alone.

Nichols said the van was not running, but both front windows were down.

An ambulance was called so EMS personnel could assess the children.

Officers located 20-year-old Kagney Nicole Ledford of Demorest, who was the driver of the van, Nichols said.

Ledford told officers she had only left the children alone for approximately 10 minutes while visiting a friend at the apartments, Nichols said.

Following the investigation, Ledford was charged with creating hazardous or offensive conditions, violation of handicapped parking, and safety restraint violations, Nichols said. She was booked into the Habersham County Detention Center.

Nichols said two of the children belonged to Ledford, while she was babysitting two for a family member.

The Habersham County Department of Family and Children's Services "took charge of the placement of the children," Nichols said.
