PEACHTREE CORNERS - The woman who drove her car into a pond on Peachtree Corners Circle Wednesday morning in a fatal one vehicle wreck has been identified.
The Gwinnett County Police Department Accident Investigation Unit said Laura Jones Tavel, 53, of Duluth, was the driver of the 2000 Honda CR-V traveling east on Peachtree Corners Circle that plunged into the retention pond.
The preliminary investigation shows that Jones was negotiating a curve when, for unknown reasons, she veered to the right and into the pond.
She was unable to exit the vehicle and died at the scene after the vehicle sank into approximately 15-20 feet of water.
Her body was recovered by fire department personnel from the Gwinnett County Fire Department and the Hall County Fire Department and was released to the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner.
Authoritiess continue to investigate the accident and are trying to determine why or what caused Ms. Jones to leave the roadway.
