By Rob Moore Reporter
TOCCOA - A Hazlehurst man has been cited after a wreck that injured him and a Stephens County deputy sheriff early Sunday in Toccoa.

The collision occurred at 12:56 a.m. on Georgia Highway 17 Alternate at the Walmart exit near Sonic.

Trooper 1st Class Casey Coffee of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa identified those involved in the wreck at 18-year-old Cameron Nash Calhoun of Hazlehurst and 24-year-old Douglas Andrew Marcus of Lavonia.

Calhoun's white 2000 Mazda B2500 pickup was exiting the Walmart parking area, attempting to cross all lanes of Georgia 17 Alternate to enter a private drive, Coffee said.

A black Stephens County Sheriff's Office 2009 Ford Crown Victoria, driven by Marcus, was traveling north on Georgia 17 Alternate, Coffee said.

"The driver of Vehicle 1 [Calhoun] failed to yield to Vehicle 2 [Marcus] and entered its path of travel," Coffee said.

The patrol car then struck the truck in the right front fender with its front, causing the truck to spin around in the road, Coffee said. The truck came to rest facing west in the road.

After impact, the patrol car entered a northbound ditch and struck a traffic sign with its front, then continued traveling north and struck a culvert with its front, coming to rest, Coffee said.

Both drivers were hurt and were taken by ambulance to Stephens County Hospital.

Calhoun was cited by GSP for failure to yield.

Marcus reported for duty at the sheriff's office Sunday night.

No update on Calhoun is immediately available.
