Gainesville man dies while swimming off Clearwater Beach

By The Associated Press
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities say one man is dead following an apparent drowning off Clearwater Beach.

Clearwater officials say the 20-year-old man was swimming about 30 yards from shore Friday evening when he went under. The man's father and a family friend swam out to help but couldn't find him.

According to Channel 2 in Atlanta, officials in Florida identified the victim as Ryan Terry of Gainesville.

After responding to a 911 call, police used a personal watercraft to find the young man and bring him to shore. Rescuers attempted CPR, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Terry's friend, 41-year-old Donald Larry Duncan of Gainesville, said a rip-current dragged both of them under the water, according to Channel 2.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that the family friend, Duncan, started feeling chest pains at some point, and the 41-year-old man was taken to a nearby hospital. His condition wasn't immediately available.

---

Information from: Tampa Bay Times (St. Petersburg, Fla.), http://www.tampabay.com.
