Gainesville man dies while swimming off Clearwater Beach

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities say one man is dead following an apparent drowning off Clearwater Beach.<br /> <br /> Clearwater officials say the 20-year-old man was swimming about 30 yards from shore Friday evening when he went under. The man's father and a family friend swam out to help but couldn't find him.<br /> <br /> According to Channel 2 in Atlanta, officials in Florida identified the victim as Ryan Terry of Gainesville.<br /> <br /> After responding to a 911 call, police used a personal watercraft to find the young man and bring him to shore. Rescuers attempted CPR, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.<br /> <br /> Terry's friend, 41-year-old Donald Larry Duncan of Gainesville, said a rip-current dragged both of them under the water, according to Channel 2.<br /> <br /> The Tampa Bay Times reports that the family friend, Duncan, started feeling chest pains at some point, and the 41-year-old man was taken to a nearby hospital.
