ATLANTA (AP) -- Gov. Nathan Deal has announced the formation of a group expected to help improve student achievement in the arts.
Deal said Wednesday the Arts Learning Task Force will provide recommendations to state officials on implementing arts education in K-12 classrooms. The group is also expected to examine existing arts education initiatives in Georgia and elsewhere.
Gladys Wyant of Gainesville is among those named to the group. Wyant is the Executive Director of The Arts Council in Gainesville. Debi West, an art teacher and department chair at North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, was also named to the panel.
Deal says the overall goal of the 16-member task force is to help Georgia schools produce students who are culturally literate and able to think creatively.
The Georgia Department of Economic Development's Georgia Council of the Arts will administer the task force.
