Boy shot, killed on father-son boat trip in NE Ga.

By The Associated Press
CARLTON, Ga. (AP) Authorities say they're investigating the death of a 15-year-old teenager killed when a gun discharged during a father-son outing along the Broad River in northeast Georgia.

Madison County sheriff's Capt. Jimmy Patton said the investigation is ongoing, but that all indications are that the shooting was an accident. Patton said the father is extremely distraught over the death of his son, Briar Newsome of Carlton.

Patton tells The Athens Banner-Herald that the gun discharged around 5:30 p.m. Thursday as the father and son were putting a boat into the river near the Elbert County line.

Patton said they had taken the rifle with them in case they saw a wild hog. He said the father was carrying the rifle and it discharged while they were trying to load the boat.
