Ga. boy shot during field day games, hospitalized

By The Associated Press
JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) -- An elementary school student in suburban Atlanta was shot in the head during field day activities and has been hospitalized.

Clayton County Public Schools spokeswoman Vicki Gavalas says a shot was fired from off campus and wounded a boy who was outside for field day Tuesday afternoon at Callaway Elementary School in Jonesboro.

Gavalas says the boy was wounded by a shot fired from a BB gun and the boy's injury isn't believed to be life-threatening. Gavalas says the student and his mother have been taken to a local hospital.

Details on the boy's condition weren't immediately available and Gavalas says Clayton County police are investigating the shooting. Messages left for department officials weren't immediately returned.

Jonesboro is about 18 miles south of downtown Atlanta.
