Man killed in shooting outside Athens nightclub

By The Associated Press
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) Police are investigating weekend shootings outside an Athens nightclub that killed one man and injured another.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports police believe both victims were innocent bystanders who got hit by gunfire in the parking lot outside Bootleggers nightclub at about 2:40 a.m. Saturday.

Athens-Clarke County police say 22-year-old Derrick Merritt was killed. A second man, 22-year-old Jamaris Antrellis Walter, was taken to a hospital for treatment Saturday but was not listed as a patient Sunday.

Police are seeking help from witnesses with any information about the shootings. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the case.
