Storm topples tree on car, kills driver in Athens

By The Associated Press
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) Police blame a storm packing powerful winds for the death of a man in Athens.

Athens-Clarke County Police Maj. Mike Hunsinger says strong winds Wednesday morning pushed over a tree that crashed atop a car, killing the driver. He said the death occurred at a mobile home park at about 6 a.m. as storms tore through the county, downing tree limbs and power lines.

Georgians are facing severe weather for a third day. The National Weather Service says strong thunderstorms and isolated tornadoes possible mostly in the middle and southern regions of the state.

Police did not immediately release the name of the man killed in Athens to ensure his family was notified first.
