Immigrant student advocacy group plans UGA rally

By The Associated Press
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) An immigrant student advocacy group is planning Monday to protest a policy that blocks undocumented immigrant students from attending some of the state's universities.

Eduardo Samaniego of the Georgia Dreamers Alliance tells the Athens Banner-Herald his group is planning to march to the office of University of Georgia President Jere Morehead Monday to demand that he speak out against a state Board of Regents policy that blocks illegal immigrant students from attending some of the state's most competitive schools.

The students are able to attend smaller schools, but must pay out-of-state tuition and are ineligible for financial aid.

UGA spokesman Tom Jackson says the school supports freedom of expression and the group has a right to protest as long as they stay within the parameters of their permit.
