Guilty plea, sentence given in Oakwood attempted rape case

GAINESVILLE - Ramon Morgan, 32, of Gainesville, decided to plea "Guilty" shortly before he was to face the start of his jury trial.

His decision followed testimony made by the victim in a pre-trial hearing concerning a previous attack by Morgan at the insistence of the defense.

Morgan entered a guilty plea to the charges of attempted rape, abuse of a disabled adult and sexual battery, involving an incident in May, 2013.

The victim of the defendant was a close relative, an Oakwood woman, who is physically disabled and cognitively delayed.

Morgan received a total sentence of 20 years: 10 years to be served in incarceration and the balance on probation.

Morgan will be required to register as a sex offender.

Lee Darragh, District Attorney of the Northeastern Judicial Circuit of Georgia,
said, "Mentally and physically challenged adults are among the most vulnerable of our community. Morgan was rightfully held accountable by his plea of guilty and sentence without the victim having to testify more than she did. She was a brave young woman and the we are glad that she'll not likely be Morgan's victim ever again."

Assistant District Attorney Zachary Smith had prepared the case for trial.
