University System of Georgia approves tobacco ban

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) The Georgia Board of Regents has voted to implement a system-wide ban on the use of all forms of tobacco products.

University System of Georgia officials said in a statement Wednesday that the ban will also apply to events being hosted by institutions within the system and exceptions may be made for research purposes.

Vice Chancellor for Human Resources Marion Fedrick says University System officials feel responsible for promoting the health and well-being of students, staff and visitors.

Officials say enforcement of the policy will be up to the presidents of each institution and that visitors who don't comply with the policy may be asked to leave campus.

Officials say the University System of Georgia will also provide information on tobacco cessation for those looking for help.
