Soccer: Lady War Eagles open region play with road win

By staff reports
MONROE -- The Chestatee girls soccer team opened Region 8-AAAA play with a 3-1 win over Monroe Area on the road Friday night.

Merrie Barnett got things going quickly for the Lady War Eagles (4-2-0, 1-0-0 Region 8-AAAA) scoring just seven minutes into the game for a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until late in the game.

Barnett assisted Sadie Foote on a goal with just 12:35 left in the game for a 2-0 lead. Monroe, however, answered one minute later to make it a 2-1 Chestatee lead.

The War Eagles would seal the win 28 seconds later. Foote again was in the middle of the action blasting a hard shot at the Hurricane keeper, who was able to deflect the ball down. But Allison Whidden knocked in the rebound for the goal.

Samantha Addington, Bailey Hooper, and Nina Burgess provided strong mid-field play for Chestatee, which outshot Monroe Area (1-2-1, 0-1-0) 13-7 for the game.

Chestatee is off for a week before playing host to Walnut Grove next Friday.
