By Morgan Lee Sports Editor
LOGANVILLE -- The Gainesville boys basketball team fended off Cedar Shoals 53-51 in the Region 8-AAAAA quarterfinals on Monday in Loganville to clinch a state tournament berth in coach Benjie Wood's first season in charge.

"I can't put into words how proud I am of these kids for how far they've come, not just as players but as people, this season," Wood said.

Luke Maddox scored 24 points to lead the Red Elephants (16-10), who held on in a back-and-forth battle. Gainesville led 8-7 after the first quarter and 36-30 at the start of the fourth.

Gainesville moves on to the 8-AAAAA semifinals, where they will take on top-seeded Clarke Central at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in Loganville.
