8-AAAAA tournament: Gainesville boys and girls stomp on, Branch girls ousted

By Morgan Lee Sports Editor
LOGANVILLE -- The Gainesville boys basketball team fended off Cedar Shoals 53-51 in the Region 8-AAAAA quarterfinals on Monday in Loganville to clinch a state tournament berth in coach Benjie Wood's first season in charge.

"I can't put into words how proud I am of these kids for how far they've come, not just as players but as people, this season," Wood said.

Luke Maddox scored 24 points to lead the Red Elephants (16-10), who held on in a back-and-forth battle. Gainesville led 8-7 after the first quarter and 36-30 at the start of the fourth.

Gainesville moves on to the 8-AAAAA semifinals, where they will take on top-seeded Clarke Central at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in Loganville.

Shikiya Brown scored nine points, as the Lady Red Elephants got back into the state playoffs after a one-season absence via their Region 8-AAAAA quarterfinal win on Monday in Loganville.

Paisley Lee also scored eight points, while Tamia Rucker put up six points, as Gainesville (20-6) took an early lead and cruised into the semifinals.

"This is a huge accomplishment for our program; we have a young team this year, and they have fought hard and committed," Lady Red Elephants coach Brenda Hill-Gilmore said.

The Lady Red Elephants will take on Clarke Central at 4 p.m. in the 8-AAAAA semifinals on Monday in Loganville. Gainesville split regular season contests against the Lady Gladiators.

"It's going to be a battle; we're going to have our hands full," Hill-Gilmore said. "We've got to play great defense, block out and play our game."

The Lady Falcons fell on Monday in the Region 8-AAAAA quarterfinals in Loganville. The loss ended Flowery Branch's season.
