By Staff
The Chestatee boys and girls tennis teams opened their 2014 seasons with a sweep over West Hall on Monday at Alberta Banks Park in Flowery Branch.

The War Eagles won 4-1, with the Lady War Eagles prevailing 3-2.

Considered a rebuilding year after losing five seniors off of last year's state tournament team, the Chestatee boys appear ready to continue their recent success. Chestatee's Tyler Burgess won at No. 2 singles over Phuoc Nguyen 6-0, 6-1 and Hasten Haynes picked up a point at No. 3 singles for the War Eagles with a 6-1, 6-3 win over West Hall's John Threadgill. Chestatee swept the doubles matches as Junior's Reed Johnson and Austin Passmore defeated Joey Griffing and Jorge Pernadac 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1, and Logan Gruenenfelder and Ethan Kapiloff won 6-1, 6-1 over Enoch Lee and Kevin Guiong in the No. 2 match. The Spartans avoided the sweep as Johnny Griffing battled to defeat Chestatee's Juan Carrion 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.

The Lady War Eagles, meanwhile, return six of seven starters from last year's state tournament team and hope to build on that success. Senior Lily Kiang led the way Monday with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 1 singles match over the Lady Spartan's Thu Bui. Chestatee swept the doubles matches as Junior's Haley King and Grace Brown defeated Rachel Were and Charmie Adajania 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 doubles match and Carolina Gijon and Melanie Smith won 6-3, 6-0 over Caroline Tuttle and Leyla Karimizah. West Hall won the Nos. 2 and 3 singles matches as Yennifer Clarin defeated Chestatee's Adasery Osorno 7-5, 6-2 and the Lady Spartan's Katie Harben took care of Natalie McNitt 6-1, 6-1.
