Gladiators shut down by Blades, 3-0

By staff reports
ESTERO, Fla. -- Trevor Cann stopped all 21 Gwinnett shots faced, as the Gladiators were shutout 3-0 Saturday night by the Florida Everblades at Germain Arena.

Gwinnett (18-26-1-2) out-chanced Florida (25-16-2-2) in the opening period and outshot them 14-6, but it was Florida jumping out to the lead at 10:58 on a goal by defenseman Jordan Henry. The tally immediately followed a series of close-in chances on the power play for the Gladiators, but Cann stood on his head to keep Gwinnett off the scoresheet.

The lone goal of the second period came on a stroke of bad luck for Gwinnett. Blades forward Brandon MacLean flew into the Gladiators zone and tossed a pass through the middle of the ice intended for a teammate on the near wing. Instead the puck was deflected away by Gwinnett defenseman Eric Springer into his own net to make it a 2-0 game just 1:13 into the stanza. Gwinnett managed just two shots through the period.

Florida continued clamping down in the third, limiting the Gladiators to five shots and scoring another goal. Trevor Bruess hammered home a one-timer off goalie Scott Stajcer and in at 18:12 of the third. Stajcer made 23 saves in a losing cause for the Gladiators.

Gwinnett is next in action on Valentines Day at 7 p.m. at the Amway Center in Orlando against the Solar Bears.
