No. 15 Nighthawks get split at UAH Charger Chillout

By staff reports
HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA -- The No. 15 University of North Georgia softball team split a pair of games on the opening day of the University of Alabama-Huntsville Charger Chillout falling 10-9 in 10 innings to West Georgia before rebounding to post a 6-2 win over West Alabama.

The game was scoreless through two innings before North Georgia erupted for four runs in the top of the third inning. A double by Sarah Johnson would score Taylor Anne Merritt prior to a two-RBI double by Jessica Finch scoring Johnson and Kim McMillan. Finch would cap the inning's scoring when she crossed the plate following a fielding error by UWG's right-fielder.

UWG narrowed the deficit to 4-3 in their half of the third but UNG would tack on a pair in the top of the fourth to lead 6-3 on a two-RBI single by McMillan.

UWG squared up the game with a pair of runs in the fourth and a single run in the fifth before a scoreless sixth and seventh inning sent the game to extras.

North Georgia raced out to an 8-6 lead with two runs in the bottom of the eighth courtesy of a Tiffanie Burns sacrifice fly and a RBI single by Merritt. UWG would force more softball with a two-out, two-RBI single.

The two teams traded runs in the ninth with UNG's run coming on a RBI single by Johnson but UWG again found the equalizer with two outs on the scoreboard.

Following a scoreless top of the 10th for the North Georgia, the Wolves plated the game winner in the bottom with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Johnson led the Nighthawk offense with a 3-5 outing from the plate with a run scored and two RBI's. Courtney Poole pitched nine and two-third innings allowing 14 hits while striking out four.

In the second game, North Georgia scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to rally back from a late 2-1 deficit and earn the split on the day.

West Alabama took a 2-1 lead through three innings but a Rochelle Shuman triple in the fifth scored Johnson and McMillan to put the Nighthawks up 3-2. An inning later, North Georgia tacked on three more with the aid of a UWA throwing error, passed ball and wild pitch.

McMillan and Johnson combined to go a perfect 6-6 from the plate in the second game while Meagan May pitched in with a pair of hits. Victoria Sink earned her second victory of the season in the circle tossing a complete game scattering nine hits.

North Georgia (4-2) will face Miles College at 3:00 and North Alabama at 5:00 in tomorrow's Charger Chillout action.
