GAINESVILLE - The Longstreet Society boasts of having the only known live, public, 24-hour webcam in Gainesville.

The webcam broadcasts from General James Longstreet's Piedmont Hotel at 827 Maple Street and viewing at is free. The cam can also be accessed via our website at

The webcam is most often stationed outside the hotel with a view across the lawn but is sometimes moved indoors to cover special events. Webcam visitors have watched live Civil War lectures from the W.L. Norton Community Room, a musical performed on the hotel's front porch and re-enactors at the Society's annual picnic. And on any given day you can watch maintenance performed, see guests come and go or see a thunderstorm rumble through town. The cam also watched and recorded this year's remarkable snowfall.

Train whistles picked up by the audio feed remind us daily that the Piedmont was once a railroad hotel and the neighborhood roosters remind us that poultry was once a staple of the hotel
dining room.
