Gainesville City School Board restores full calendar

By B.J. Williams News Director
GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville City School System will operate on a full calendar next year for the first time since the state began making austerity cuts to the budget and reducing contributions to local school systems.

Schools Superintendent Merrianne Dyer said the full calendar next year will be a big help for teachers.

"During our time of reduced calendar, they've had to do professional learning and training in the afternoons and evenings after a regular work day...it's just not as effective," said Dyer.

Governor Deal has proposed an increase of $547 million in education funding for the upcoming fiscal year, allowing for restoration of state funds to local school districts.

Dyer said the 2014-15 calendar closely aligns with Hall County's calendar, although Gainesville students will return to class on August 7, while Hall County students go back to school on August 8.
