State DOT awards $48M contract for NE Ga. road project

ATLANTA - The state Department of Transportation has awarded a $47.8 million contract for nine miles of work on a northeast Georgia road.<br /> <br /> Georgia 72 from Comer in Madison County, across the Broad River and into Elbert County will be widened and rebuilt by E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc., of Snellville. The work is due for completion in December, 2017.<br /> <br /> The project is one of the last of major improvements launched by Georgia DOT this year, which saw the beginning of 149 such efforts across the state, valued at nearly $952 million.<br /> <br /> The most expensive of the new work announced Wednesday is the $53.3 million widening and reconstruction of seven miles of Sardis Church Road between Skipper Road and U.S. Highway 129 in Bibb County. That project, which includes building five bridges, is due to be completed in May, 201. C.W. Matthews Contracting Co., Inc., of Marietta, will perform the work.<br />
