Early morning fire damages Gainesville warehouse

By Staff
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville fire crews responded to the scene of a commercial fire on White Sulphur Road Thursday morning.

Fire Department Capt. Keith Smith said six people were at work at the warehouse belonging to Almark Foods when they realized there was a problem.

"They smelled smoke, saw smoke and then called 911," said Smith. He said no one was injured.

Smith said White Sulphur Road was closed for a time at Howard Road, not just so firefighters could work at the fire scene, but also because water used to fight the fire poured onto the roadway and froze.

"It was 24 degrees out there," said Smith. White Sulphur Road re-opened just after 9 a.m.

The city fire marshal was investigating to determine a cause for the fire.
