Winter weather could play havoc with busy area sports schedule

By Morgan Lee Sports Editor
(UPDATE:All Tuesday games and contests for Banks County, Gainesville City, Hall County and White County teams have been postponed.)

We've heard that getting back to reality is sometimes like a cold slap in the face -- but this is ridiculous.

The ebb and flow of high school sports was supposed to get back to normal this week, following the winter holiday break of 2013-14.

Now we're just hoping we can get some games/matches in.

This week's slate includes some big area basketball games, while some of the area's wrestling teams will compete in the state duals meet this weekend.

Some of those contests are already in jeopardy, however, due to the sub-freezing temperatures that will move in early Monday morning and make the roads of northeast Georgia a hazard.

Several area school systems have already cancelled school for Monday, and with temperatures not expected to travel north of 32 degrees on Monday, that could mean more cancellations for Tuesday and a huge slate of games that comes with it.

It would be a shame if the weather derails some of this week's contests, as there are some big battles on the horizon.

Region 7-AAA will could see a key showdown between Buford and Dawson County in Buford, while the Johnson boys will look to get their Region 8-AAAA schedule rolling against Madison County in Danielsville. Meanwhile, the Gainesville girls face a huge Region 8-AAAAA showdown with Salem -- all of the games scheduled for Tuesday.

There are also plenty of intriguing match-ups on the line this weekend, not the least of which coming in Macon, where the area's best wrestling teams will vie for state supremacy. Wrestling is scheduled to begin on Thursday and wrap on Saturday. Area programs Jefferson -- which is gunning for its 13th straight duals crown -- Banks County -- defending Class AAA champ -- Buford, Chestatee, Commerce, Flowery Branch, Lumpkin County and North Forsyth will all take their shots at championships this weekend.

Friday and Saturday also feature some more big basketball showdowns. including East Hall at White County and Salem at Flowery Branch on Friday, as well as one of the state's traditional rivalries on Saturday, as Gainesville travels to East Hall. The Battle of Oakwood will also commence on the hardwood on Saturday, as West Hall pays a visit to Johnson.

That's, of course, if Mother Nature complies.

Keep an eye on Access North Georgia for updated games schedules, should winter weather interfere, throughout the week.
