Tech offense struggles in scrimmage

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA -- With two weeks remaining before the season opener against Elon, Georgia Tech's defense is gaining momentum.

The defense kept the offense scoreless for six consecutive possessions in Saturday's scrimmage at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The highlight for the Yellow Jackets' offense was Vad Lee's touchdown pass to DeAndre Smelter.

Running backs Broderick Snoddy and David Sims ran well. Snoddy, also a sprinter on Georgia Tech's track team, had a 61-yard run and a 39-yard catch from freshman quarterback Justin Thomas.

Lee had a 1-yard touchdown run before the defense began its run of scoreless possessions.

Coach Paul Johnson says the Yellow Jackets improved in avoiding turnovers and penalties.

Linebacker Quayshawn Nealy says the defense is showing "much more of an edge" with first-year coordinator Ted Roof.
