UGA professor, demographer Doug Bachtel dies

By The Associated Press
ATHENS - Doug Bachtel, a University of Georgia professor and demographer who helped leaders across Georgia make decisions about their communities, has died.

Lord and Stephens Funeral Homes said Bachtel died Thursday.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Bachtel, a faculty member in UGA's Department of Housing and Consumer Economics, revealed the numbers and facts underlying social and economic issues affecting the state.

As Bachtel produced more data that helped Georgians understand the strengths and weaknesses of their communities over the years, he became one of UGA's best-known and respected researchers.

Bachtel's funeral is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Lord and Stephens West in Bogart.
